First Lutheran Church of Ketchikan Receives National Grant Funding
First Lutheran Church has received $175,000 from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. First Lutheran Church Ketchikan has roots in Norwegian customs and traditions since being founded by fishermen and their families in 1925. Services in the early years were conducted in Norwegian and English. We are looking forward to our 100-year celebration in 2025. The building is both historic and iconic, prominently located on the rock at 1200 Tongass Avenue with a tall steeple cross guiding early mariners and air pilots safely back to port.
Presently in 2022 we look very different from our origins. This congregation is very diverse in nationalities. First Lutheran members and friends have found a welcoming church home regardless of religious backgrounds or church affiliations. We truly are a place for all of God’s people.
First Lutheran offers a variety of faith building opportunities including Bible studies, Men’s breakfast, youth education, puppet ministry, a variety of musical groups, including a choir, handbells, chimes, and more.

Church Services & Activities
This historic landmark will be celebrating 100 years of Lutheran Church services, weddings and funerals in 2025. The church is in need of structural repairs, but is optimistic that a financial solution will be found and continues to be a welcoming church for all ages, with with Sunday services filled with rich liturgy and children's church.
The First Lutheran Church Puppets is a very popular program for children and adults alike. Many Sunday services include a delightful, inspiring, musical message from the puppeteers.
Young children attend church with their families and then move downstairs for their own special message and activities during the sermon.
Youth Group has their own activities for grades 6-12 on Sunday evenings. They come to hang out, chat and have fun, faithful fellowship with fellow youth. There they enjoy snacks, songs, and the word. Come on over!
